(GQ Middle East) A Curator's Guide to Marrakech’s 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair

GQ Middle East, Hiba Ali, January 28, 2025
From figurative embroideries, commanding paintings and artist-curator run spaces, this is what you need to see

It might be peak winter, but 1-54 is gearing up to heat things up. The art fair is headed back to its homestay in Marrakech, with everyone–enthusiasts and collectors alike– making their way over to the luxurious La Mamounia.

“We’re thrilled to bring 1-54 back to Marrakech,” shares Founding Director Touria El Glaoui. “[We’re] showcasing an exciting lineup of exhibitors, including newcomers like Tokyo’s space Un and Kuwait’s Hunna Art.”

If you don’t already know, 1-54's mission is spotlighting art from Africa and its diaspora, deriving its name from the 54 countries on the continent. This year brings together over 30 exhibitors from 15 countries—including 15 galleries from Africa, 10 of which are Moroccan. Fresh faces like Galerie Medina (Bamako) and C+N Gallery CANEPANERI (Milan) join the fair’s lineup for the first time across any of its global editions.

If you’re headed over and not sure where to begin, GQ tapped curator Sanaz Askari to guide you through it all. Beyond her curatorial work in the region, Askari heads up Mine, a platform supporting emerging artists, and now she offers up a glimpse into all the must-sees at this year’s edition of 1-54:
