The Best Art Exhibitions to Visit This January

Here's what's happening across the MENA region
Amelia Dhuga, GQ Middle East, January 6, 2026

The region’s art scene is kicking off 2026 with a strong and thoughtful run of exhibitions. There’s a noticeable sense of nostalgia and reflection, as artists turn towards memory, time and cultural continuity.

From Jellel Gasteli’s quiet photographs of Mediterranean gardens – made during his early experiments with photography in the 1980s – to Fredj Moussa’s immersive, lived-in domestic spaces, many of the works blur the line between past and present.

Elsewhere, time feels more elastic and unsettled. It folds in on itself through Anuar Khalifi’s shifting environments and Moussa’s reworked archival materials, where histories are rearranged rather than fixed.

The body – and the traces it leaves behind – appears again and again. Faces dissolve into abstraction, while feminine figures stand guard at thresholds in Under Her Wing.

Taken together, these exhibitions reflect on what is preserved, what disappears and how cultural histories are carried forward, inviting viewers to slow down and engage more thoughtfully. Here are some of the best exhibitions to visit this month.
